Spectacular pair of backlit wall sculptures. Saint Huber and the Holy Deer (Jägermeister). Vintage 50s-60s.
Exceptional pieces for its spectacular design, elaborate manufacture and large size. A true masterpiece of the forging as decorative art, made in Spain in the mid XXth century.
They represent the miracle of St. Hubert (or Hubertus) and his encounter with the deer. The legend dates back to the 7th century. According to this, Hubert, after his wife’s death, retired to the forest for hunting until, pursuing a deer, it turned backwards, with a crucifix between the antlers, highlighted by a halo and rays, and said, «Hubert, if you do not return to the Lord and lead a holy life, you will go to hell.»
St. Hubert is the patron of hunters. The iconography has represented the scene throughout history symbolizing it with the image of the deer with the cross between its antlers. This is the origin of the famous symbol of the brand Jägermeister.
This pair of appliques, authentic wall sculptures, faithfully reproduce the scene. The deer is depicted looking backwards, with the cross on its forehead and surrounded by a halo with rays, on a foliage basis.
Hubert is depicted as a hunter, bearing a crossbow in one hand and a hooded hawk on the other.
Extremely detailed craftsmanship, paying close attention to every detail. The coat of the animal, the texture of the clothes and the foliage, etc. have been faithfully reproduced,
Completely made in iron forge, with blackish finish.
Both carry rear illumination, with socket for bulbs E14 (7 lights in the case of Hubert and 6 the deer). Electrical installation checked and in operation. Hubert’s electrical installation is the original. The wiring of the deer was renewed.
Both incorporate welded rings on the back for hanging.
Dimensions:
Deer: total height 40,55 inches, width 27,55 inches, depth 3,93 inches.
Hubert: total height 33.46 inches, width 17,71 inches, depth 3,93 inches.
